For the past two centuries, the academic establishment has attempted to subjugate the magnificence of human intellect to the narrow and suffocating dictates of methodological materialism. This school of thought, deeply flawed by false premises and shortsighted reductionism, sought to convince us that the vast richness of our inner life—love, contemplation of the cosmos, the search for objective truth, and our very capacity for reasoning—is nothing more than the accidental byproduct of blind atomic collisions in the cerebral cortex. We have been made to believe, with unprecedented scientific arrogance, that the human person is just a pre-programmed biological automaton, devoid of authentic freedom and enslaved to the tyranny of his neurochemical determinations. However, the relentless advance of contemporary quantum physics and molecular biology has begun to demolish, brick by brick, this dark intellectual prison.
By observing the unfathomable complexity of the human brain, current neuroscience faces an explanatory abyss that pure materialism is unable to bridge. Neural networks, no matter how formidable and intricate they may be, are nothing more than organic cables through which ions and neurotransmitters circulate. Matter, by its very nature, is inert and lacks intentionality. It is ontologically impossible for local physical processes, governed by electromagnetic interactions, to give rise by themselves to the apprehension of immaterial universal concepts, such as the mathematical notion of infinity or the ethical imperative of justice. Human consciousness is not secreted like the liver secretes bile, as the nineteenth-century positivists postulated. The mind acts on the brain, using the biological architecture as a prodigious instrument, but it is not exhausted nor does it originate exclusively in it. This is a resounding triumph of classical metaphysics, which already recognized the body as the material substrate informed by a superior, immaterial and transcendent principle.
The collapse of neurological determinism has profound implications for the way we understand our own freedom and dignity. If human will were simply an algorithmic illusion produced by the synapse, the entire moral edifice of Western civilization would collapse. Compassion, sacrifice for others, and heroic love would lose their ontological substance to become mere evolutionary survival strategies. But the reality is different. The most advanced experiments in synaptic plasticity show us empirically that voluntary conscious attention has the causal power to physically reconfigure brain circuits. It is the intellect that shapes matter, demonstrating the superiority of the spirit over the biological body. This downward directionality, where the immaterial mind rearranges the brain topology, annihilates the central fallacy of those who seek to strip us of our moral responsibility and reduce us to passive victims of our instincts.
Faced with the advance of transhumanism and technocratic dystopias that seek to hack the human brain and manipulate our biology as if we were mere silicon electronic devices, the vindication of our immateriality becomes an imperative resistance. Each human being is an unrepeatable treasure, a miracle of design whose essence escapes the equations of classical mechanics. It is our intellectual duty to denounce the fraud of a science divorced from truth and right reason, which seeks to lower the dignity of the person to justify its commercialization and control. True science, exercised with rigor and amazement, does not diminish man, but rather returns our gaze to the sky, confirming that our intellect is called to know the perfect order of the cosmos and participate in the immutable laws of nature.
