With pure, diamond-cut logic, Plantinga proceeds to methodically eviscerate the insufferable arrogance of the new militant atheism (so-called "scientism"). The masterful argument brings to light the supreme and catastrophic irony that defines our era: secular dogmatists wield the paradigm of blind, materialistic evolution as their weapon of choice to crush classical metaphysics and praise the "Goddess Reason", without realizing in their blindness that the recoil of that same weapon completely destroys the ontological foundations that make reason itself possible. The reasoning is devastating: if human beings are simply neural beasts arising from a fortuitous chain of chemical accidents and survival pressures, then the synaptic network of our brains has been wired exclusively to ensure escape from a predator or obtaining food, not to discern the arcana of quantum mechanics, moral justice or, paradoxically, the theory of evolution itself. To ruthless natural selection, it is completely irrelevant whether beliefs held in a mind are objectively true or delusional hallucinations, as long as the resulting physical behavior increases the likelihood of genetic transmission. A hominid can flee from a saber-toothed tiger motivated by a true belief ("the tiger will kill me"), or by an absurd falsehood ("the tiger is an invisible demon and running is a magical rite"); blind nature only cares that he runs. Therefore, biological evolution left to chance never acts as a filter that guarantees the Truth, but only as a filter of motor behavior. Consequently, the only firm and logically coherent basis upon which empirical "Science" and analytical "Reason" can claim universal validity is by presupposing that the human intellect was intentionally designed and calibrated in the image of a supreme Creator, the original Logos, for the express purpose of grasping reality. Rejecting God under the pretext of defending "scientific rationality" is the greatest act of epistemological suicide in history. He who denies that human intelligence is an immaterial and transcendent spark degrades his own mind to the status of a glorified survival thermostat. And a thermostat is not required to have doctoral theses or universal truths. Faith in a rational and transcendent Order is, to the panic of the secular establishment, the only and exclusive scaffolding that can support the majestic edifice of authentic human knowledge.
