The demagogue knows with neurobiological precision that the analytical deliberation of the prefrontal cortex consumes high flows of glucose and demands calm, while the instinctive excitation of the limbic system—fear, tribal resentment, or compassionate sentimentality—spreads instantly through the masses with zero metabolic cost. Pathetic fallacies do not constitute imperfect reasoning; They are the very negation of argument, an assault on affect that dispenses with the duty to present premises.
Scholastic theology, illuminated by the pen of Saint Augustine, has never reprobated the nobility of human passions, as long as they remain subordinated to the primacy of understanding and truth. The Bishop of Hippo taught that to lead the soul towards certainty, it is first necessary to illuminate the intelligence with solid evidence and irreproachable reasoning; Only when the intellect has contemplated and verified the truth, is it licit to knock on the doors of emotion to inflame the lazy will towards the fulfillment of the discovered good. The demagogue reverses this command of the Almighty: he strips the speech of all evidence, excites the most basic passions of the crowd and extracts an irrational assent that degrades the dignity of the listener. From this trunk spring the tearful appeals of the Argument ad Misericordiam, where mercy is invoked to justify obvious infractions of civil law, or the blind calls to Tribal Loyalty, which seek to force us to applaud error or injustice under the servile slogan of accompanying our own, rightly or wrongly.
The last link in this pathological chain is the Slippery Slope or Domino Fallacy, where the predictive capacity of the frontal lobe is instrumentalized to generate unfounded anticipatory terror. The catastrophic arguer links an endless series of causal presumptions without proven plausibility, prophesying that the slightest reformist concession on an inconsequential matter will infallibly trigger the ruin of institutions and the dissolution of society. Unlike the dreamer who confuses reality with his desires, the slippery slope tyrannizes us by confusing reality with our most apocalyptic fears. Faithful to classical teaching, the upright analyst stops this current of alarmism by firmly interrupting the chain of unreasonable links and applying the healthy irony of the Castilian proverb to the prophet of remote calamities: trust me for a long time.
